Our extensive workshop space comprises of three adjoining industrial units, divided into four main departments: woodshop, metalshop, paintshop and the Rocket Scenery store. Each department shares a central construction and paint space (with gantry crane), overlooked by our design office, which allows us to completely assemble every set prior to fit-up. Every show we work on at Rocket gets redrawn absolutely before the drawings get to the shop floor. We use AutoCAD to the extent that we employ two full-time draughtsmen who act as project managers to oversee each project in collaboration with the show designer and production manager and the design office is largely where this happens. The woodshop is the largest department at Rocket, employing five experienced full-time carpenters supported by a team of talented freelancers. In addition to traditional wooden mortice and tenon constructed scenery, the woodshop team is also expert at vac-form work, laminating, fibreglassing and the application of printed images to scenery.

Rocket employs three permanent scenic artists backed up by a regular team of talented freelance painters which allows us to demonstrate a broad depth of skill and experience. We use both new and traditional techniques and materials to create the widest range of scenic finishes. The paintshop area itself covers approximately 450 sq/m and has vertical space to paint scenery over 6 metres tall. The metalshop has two full-time fabricators backed up by an experienced freelance team, each skilled in MIG and TIG welding. We are able to construct scenery and stage engineering in steel, aluminium and stainless steel and we make extensive use of laser-cut components to ensure accuracy and efficiency during the fit-up process.

Design Office

We use 3D modelling software, Photoshop, and CNC programming software here to most effectively achieve what it is you want to see. We also have a large format printer for technical drawings (to A1), a scanner for complex images and a secure wi-fi connection for visiting clients.

Woodshop

Rocket also now owns and operates a brand new Homag CNC router on site, which enables us to cut complex individual or multiple components for scenery in sheet materials up to 8`x4` size. We specialise in making bespoke modular show floors using this machine, often with tiled, planked, stone or parquet engraving effects that designers often demand.

Paintshop

It now has a recently completed paint-bridge with a frame size capable of stretching cloths measuring up to a maximum of 14.5m x 7.2m. In addition, the space is enough to lay out and paint complete show floors for medium-scale venues in their entirety with extra space for other large scenic elements alongside.

Metalshop

Our engineers also have extensive experience in revolves, hydraulics and electro-mechanical assemblies, as well as basic steel flattage and staging.
